"Triple P" Takes First Place at the NSA Summer Open


{pop_team:2013:Piccolino:16U}Pittsburgh Power Piccolino{/pop_team:2013:Piccolino:16U}, (Triple P), brought out the bats and pounded their way to a first place finish (6-0) at the NSA North Fayette Summer Open on June 1st and 2nd. The tournament win also secured them a birth in the NSA World Series.


The team had a great weekend at the plate, racking up 71 hits while outscoring their opponents 61 to 12.

The weekend started with a 8-0 win over the Lady Bulldogs. {pop_player:Nicolette:Matz}Nikki Matz{/pop_player:Nicolette:Matz} pitched a perfect game, retiring 15 batters in a row, 9 by strikeout. {pop_player:Brianna:Clark}Bri Clark{/pop_player:Brianna:Clark} lead off the game with a walk and scored 2 batters later to start off a 3 run first inning, and the team never looked back. Darian Richards went 3-3 with a triple and Kaitlyn Millak was 2-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Game 2 with Pride Knochel turned into a slugfest, with both teams putting up big numbers at the plate. Triple P was determined and fought to the very end to hold on to a 13-11 win. {pop_player:Rachel:Skon}Rachel Skon{/pop_player:Rachel:Skon} went 3-3 at the plate with a home run, 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. {pop_player:Bethany:Palmer}Beth Palmer{/pop_player:Bethany:Palmer}, {pop_player:Taylor:Andres}Taylor Andres{/pop_player:Taylor:Andres}, and {pop_player:Aimee:Miller}Aimee Miller{/pop_player:Aimee:Miller} also homered in the game and had multiple RBIs. {pop_player:Miranda:Piccolino}Miranda Piccolino{/pop_player:Miranda:Piccolino} got the win in relief and Nikki Matz picked up the save.

After that high scoring game, the girls tightened up the defense, but kept the bats going with a 16-1, 3 inning win over Team BASIC in Game 3. Miranda Piccolino and Aimee Miller combined for a no-hitter, surrendering only 1 unearned run and striking out 5. Miller also homered in the game and Rachel Skon, Beth Palmer, and Taylor Andres each had 2 RBIs. Bri Clark and {pop_player:Angie:Stoehr}Angie Stoehr{/pop_player:Angie:Stoehr} each stole 2 bases.

The hits kept coming in Game 4, with the girls smacking 12 of them in 4 innings to beat the Burgettestown Blue Devils 11-0. Taylor Andres threw a 1 hitter in the circle, striking out 8 Devils on the way to the win. {pop_player:Julia:Zezinka}Julia Zezinka{/pop_player:Julia:Zezinka} lead the way at the plate, going 2 for 2 with an RBI and a stolen base. Nikki Matz and Andres also went 2 for 2, with 1 and 2 RBIs respectively. Angie Stoehr crushed a RBI triple to center field and closed out the scoring.

Triple P finished pool play 4-0, taking the top seed going into bracket play on Sunday.

Sunday began with a rematch with Pride Knochel. The team knew that Pride would be coming at them hard to try to avenge their loss in pool play and the girls were ready for the challenge. Miranda Piccolino took to the circle and tossed a no hitter, striking out 14 along the way. {pop_player:Darian:Richards}Darian Richards{/pop_player:Darian:Richards} was excellent behind the plate, keeping the Pride batters off balance. Angie Stoehr got the scoring started in the 4th inning, reaching on an error and scoring on a single by Aimee Miller. {pop_player:Kaitlyn:Mallik}Kaitlyn Mallik{/pop_player:Kaitlyn:Mallik} homered over the left field fence in the 5th inning to secure a 3-0 win and a place in the championship game.

The championship game put Power vs Power, as Power Kresak also advanced to the final game. Bri Clark used her speed to get things started right away by bunting her way on, stealing second, and scoring on a hit by Rachel Skon. The game stayed 1 - 0 until the top of the 4th inning when Triple P began to pull away with 3 more runs on singles by Aimee Miller and Darian Richards, a double by Beth Palmer, a sacrifice by Kaitlyn Mallik, and a single by Julia Zezinka. One more run was added in the 5th, and in the 6th inning, Palmer hit a solo home run over the left field fence to add another. 4 more runs in the top of the 7th sealed the 10-0 win. Nikki Matz pitched the complete game, giving up 7 hits and striking out 7. Skon had a great game at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and 3 RBIs. Overall, Triple P put up 17 hits in the game.

The tournament win capped off a great weekend of softball, with solid performances at the plate, in the circle, and on the field. Congratulations to everyone on this well deserved championship!
